WIlmer McClean owned a farm not far from Manassas Junction and following the fighting that ensued near and around his property, he called it quits, selling everything and moving south to the quiet town of Appomattox Courthouse. Years later, it was in his parlor that General Robert E. Lee, Commanding, Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered to Union General, Ulyssees S. Grant, Commanding General of all Union forces. In later years, McClean was fond of saying that the Civil War began on his front lawn and ended in his living room.

Lee's surrender came after four long years of bitter fighting that pitted brother against brother and father against son; almost 150 years later it remains one of the bloodiest conflicts in this nation's history. It is said that it was the Civil War that caused America to mature as a country--previously America was referred to as "these United States," but thereafter always as "the United States." The Civil War clearly was an event that divided the country, but it also sealed our union as a nation under a one flag.

Join PARR as we take to the roads early in the riding season to visit the National Historic Park at Appomattox Courthouse and tour the very site where the Civil War effectively ended.

The PARR route will include some of Virginia's most beautiful scenic byways, following the eastern side of the Shenendoah Range into Charlottesville where we'll stop for lunch. From Charlottesville, the route will continue along back country roads to Lynchburg where PARR will spend the night in the local Holiday Inn Express.

On Sunday, the group will head over to the park and spend two hours touring the site and then head north. Once again, we'll stop in Charlottesville for lunch, passing Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. Following lunch, the tour will continue up Rt 20 where we'll ride by Montpelier, home of James Madison, through the Wilderness Battlefield area, and finally end the tour just beyond at the intersection of Rt 3 and Rt 20, not far from the Chancellorville Battlefield (you'll notice a lot of the urban sprawl that is destroying the natural beauty of these sites when you get near the Chancellorville site. For those in the know, time permitting, some may want to stop in Fredericksburg for ice cream before heading home.
