Message Phyllis and I are fine, but sore. She has a broken toe and I have scrapes and a puncture wound on my left knee. We want to thank all of you for your patience, support and for sticking with us. We also appreciate the help with my bike and are especially grateful to Ron, Matt, Tom? and Mike? (I apologize if I got your names wrong, I'm still learning them) for the first aid and for the care shown in taking us to the Fauquier County Hospital emergency room. Thanks again and we look forward to riding with you again soon.

Message Hmmm, that didn't sound good. For those of us who were not on the ride can someone elaborate with the details? Presumably Phyllis was riding her Fat Boy, right?

Glad to hear that everyone is alright and there are no serious injuries. Is the broken toe the extent of the serious injuries, along with substantial bruising? After whacking that fawn two summers ago I know all too well how sore the body can be after kissing the asphalt.

Hope everyone recovers quickly and will be back in the saddle real soon.

Message Glad to see you two are ok. Hope to see you riding with us again soon.

If you want to look at it from a positive perspective, as I like to do, you've had your fall so you don't have to worry about it for a while. Everyone eventually goes down, just a matter of when and how.

Message I'm VERY glad to hear you and Phyllis are okay! (I figured her foot might be hurt too!)

I'm just glad I could help. I'd help any fellow rider, but especially a fellow PARR member.

If I didn't already know this was a good bunch of guys (and gals!) before yesterday, I sure do now.

Next time, if you really want Diesel that bad, I suggest simply dropping your bike in a parking lot.

Heal fast! I'm looking forward to seeing both of you again soon.

I'll let Steve tell the story for those who weren't there.

-Tom

Message Steve, I'm glad you posted your status here and that you and Phyllis are doing pretty well all things considered. I'm glad to have been of some help to you and and also thank Ron, Tom, Matt and the other PARR members who helped control traffic. The best thing to happen was riding with friends who care and that's typical of PARR members. Now just rest up and get back on the "horse" when the soreness goes away.

Message Thanks all. I can't tell you exactly what happened, but I believe I was taking the turn wide, then looking at the soft shoulder/ditch, then navigating the ditch and laying the bike down. I can also say that the helmut did a great job of protecting my face, the armor of the jacket cushioned the blow, the boots protected my feet and ankles. The weak link was the blue jeans that didn'g protect well enough.

Message Steve, glad you and Phyllis are safe and healing. Thanks for the description. If it's any consolation, I don't recall some elements of my encounter with Bambi two years ago, which is how I got the "Deerslayer" nickname.

I've been told that fawn actually bounced off the bike in front of me, but I don't recall seeing it, but I'm not sure if I was looking way down the road, daydreaming, or blotted the broadsiding deer from my memory. The first time I saw the stinkin' animal was when I came across it in the oncoming lane; I had thought it was injured as it couldn't stand, but as I passed the little sucker it jumped up, darted in front of me and fell directly in front of my front wheel. Deer are pretty stupid animals. They deserve to be hunted!!

Jeans are better than shorts and jeans certtainly are better than business attire, but it seems the best apparel is leather. That's why I try to dress for the worst!!

Message Ed, deer are not stupid. Thousands of years of evolution have prepared them for attachs from birds of prey or preditory mammals that pounch from above or behind, not for a vehicle flying down the road at 60 mph. It's the same with squirrels, etc. Ever wounder why they have large eyes set on each side of the head? It's to watch for those preditors, not a motorcycle. You, on the other hand, are not so well equipped to watch for lions or tigers- oh my! It's only in the last 100 years we've built these roads and put vehicles on them that are faster than any animal. Think about it. I'm not a vegetarian or anti-hunting, far from it, but I have respect for the animals I share this earth with. ~Robert~

Message For the past several years I've been wearing the Draggin Jeans, kevlar lined, for hot weather riding. I haven't gone down in them, but I do find them even more comfortable than regular jeans. The kevlar fabric they use is very soft and provides extra padding on the butt. They don't feel any hotter than regular jeans. I'm glad you guys are OK, for the most part. ~Robert~

Message Hey Ed -Since you were not at the meeting where we voted Steve & Phyllis into the club - We now have TWO, yes count them, TWO Phyllis's in the club!!!! Watch out, we're both unique since we're both named Phyllis.
(I was not on this ride - but I did ride my fat boy and Joe rode his Vulcan up to York PA last Tuesday as escort for our son's high school field trip)

Steve, I'm glad you and Phyllis are alright. I hope to meet Phyllis either this saturday at the poker run or at the Tuesday meeting.
Phyllis

Message Hey Robert,

I'm going to have to agree with Ed on deer. Deer are stupid, otherwise they wouldn't have to worry about predators, and they'd be driving cars, or motorcycles at 60mph. I'd say people have evolved for the better.

Brains are better than brawn, or beedy, flighty eyes any day.

Message Deer don't seem to have to worry about predators of their own persuasion. I think they only have to worry about humans coming after them. And what about Humans? Deer don't hunt us, it's only our own kind that we have to worry about.

And I'm sure that the reason the deer don't ride motorcycles is that, as most every living creature on the planet will agree, riding motorcyclesis not the safest nor the smartest thing to do.

As for Steve and Phyllis, I'm glad to hear you both are healing and will be riding again soon. An old saying goes "there are only 2 kinds of motorcyclists. Those that have been down and those that are going down".

Get well soon, Nelson

Message Geez, folks!! I didn't mean to start a debate on the intelligence or lack thereof of Deer or what predators exist in their lives. Robert, I have a very healthy respect for Deer and their woodland bretheren. When I was growing up I spent most of my time backpacking around New York State.

Still, when it comes to brains, at least squirrels know they're in trouble. They get in the path of a car and they run back and forth trying to figure out what to do. They know they're history if they don't act. They just aren't sure what to do about it. Deer on the other hand, either stare at ya, run in front of ya, or sometimes run straight into ya. Now that's a smart animal!! Suicide deer!!

For crying out loud--I was only kidding!! I've never tested the IQ of a deer or a squirrel to know which is smarter!!!

Message What?! Are we bikers or politicians here?! Can't anyone take a joke these days?!

You didn't start anything Ed. I just thought everyone here lived life with a little humour. Boy was I wrong!

Oh, by the way Ed, you're still right! :)

Message Steve,
Check out draggin jeans which are blue jeans with kevlar pads in the seat and knees. These jeans are nearly as cool as regular jeans in the summer while providing a resonable amount of protection. Search on dragginjeans.com.
