Message I spent all rainy-Saturday doing some research on covered bridges. You can find all sorts of information about them on the Internet except how to get to them. In the end, I found 46 I could plug into my GPS.

Today (Sunday) I hit six of them: 3 in MD and 3 in PA. Set the GPS to shortest route (meaning all back roads) and took off in the early afternoon.

The bridges were nice to see - but the riding was MOST EXCELLENT!!! While three of the bridges are pretty close to home, I discovered some wonderful backroads to get to them. I have to tell you, I sometimes think I'm blessed to be living near so many wonderful roads. A day like today makes the 120 mile round-trip commute to work worth it.

Let me know if you want the coordinates or street locations for the bridges to load into your GPS. If anyone has the coordinates for bridges or other sites off the beaten track they'd like to share I'd sure appreciate it. kkinderen@earthlink.net.

Message Yes please send them to me... also we did a Covered Bridge Trip last year or the year before.. maybe someone out there still has the maps showing bridge locations. I do have the GPS route for the trip but the bridges are not marked.

Message Ralph - it's on the way in text format. Let me know if you can use the mapsource file and I'll send it. It has all the waypoints and the tracks for the first 6 bridges.

Message One of the best known covered bridges is in my home town of Philippi, WV, also the site of the First Land Battle of the Civil War. The first battle was faugh over this bridge. Lots of history. It still has the original wood bolts and pins and much of the lumber it original too. It is fully encolsed and two lanes as was the original. Also on the way there are some more to see.

Interestingly you should mention,, I will be riding there this weekend for part of the Annual Blue & Gray Reunion each year. There is a Chili Cookoff and Motorcycle Rally/Pocker Run this Sauurday the 14th. Distance is 206 miles due west. I'll be spending Sat night and returning. They have a Super 8 Motel if any is interested. Let me know..
