Message Well fellow PARR Poker Run workers....I have a little story to tell. On my way home from event, I was on Rt 17 and just begun accelerating after signal light turned green...well I was up to about 35mph when I noticed something approaching from the left side towards my head !! I kept looking forward at traffic, both hands on the handle bars, ducked my head and WHAM, bird strike on my helmet (fore head section).

I kept going and didn't worry about the bird. Figure the score at this time was 1:0, with me surviving.

Lets say, I was glad I was wearing a full-face helmet with visor down.

Then today I receive my latest Rider Magazine issue and there is letter about a passenger being hit by 30 lb. turkey and glad to have had protective gear on since she was knocked out and fell to ground. Guess I can consisder myself LUCKY !

Message Mike, I'm damned glad you are safe, unharmed, and came out of the experience without incident. I wish I had been so lucky with my encounter with Bambi. Hmm, methinks I feel a nickname coming on. Hmmmm, I know -- BIRDMAN!!!!!!! Mike "Birdman" Mrozek!!!

Regards.

Message Mike, with this crew, its a good thing you didn't say that you wouldn't give a "rat's a$$" for the bird's chances after his/her encounter with your helmet! Very glad to hear you're safe!

Message Thanks all for your comments.....but my buddy Dave asking "how's the helmet ?" oouch !

If I knew I would get a nickname after telling this story I might have kept my mouth shut.

Actually, Dave kinda raises a good issue. Normal advise is to replace a helmet after any impact. Wonder if the bird hit qualifies ? excuse to get new helmet ? Externally the helmet looks OK. I'm really glad I "ducked" otherwise the strike zone would have been the visor and not sure what impact a visor can take (small bugs are not an issue but a bird ?)

I'm not exactly sure what type of bird or what size it was but I don't care to repeat the incident again.

Needless to say, I recommend a Full-face helmet "allways".

Message "Birdman," If you think you're going to go for a new helmet, check out the link I had Ralph post for the Helmet Shop. I picked up two Shoi helmets--a full face and a 3/4 and found the prices to be excellent--far better than local retail shops. Both came in a single box within days. Just make sure you know the correct size to prevent the hassle of having to make an exchange.

Don't look for Arai helmets--they no longer will allow their helmets to be sold via the internet.

Message During an Americade in the late eighties as I recall there was a fatality when a female rider was killed riding to the event. She was riding on an interstate highway. A witness said that a single large duck fell from a formation flying overhead, striking her in the head and breaking her neck. The duck was assumed to have suffered a heart attack.
