Al and I just returned from our initial check of the route we planned for the May overnight trip to Appomattox. Just a word of caution--if you are planning a trip and weren't thinking of checking the route, please think again. Al and I found some awesome roads this afternoon, but at least four, maybe five, times the well-paved road we were driving suddenly turned to dirt. On at least one occasion, we hit a dead end that wasn't on the map. On each occasion we had to make a u-turn and find an alternate route.
Also, we had to be ever vigilant for rest stops and gas. We hit some real out-of-the-way roads and gas stations were not abundant.
I'm thankful to Al and Dave that they're planning this trip with me--it's a real eye opener charting out a tentative route and then checking it.
